Day Thirteen
Homeward bound! Mark and I took a tour of the upper floors of the Hearst Castle and were impressed by the opulence and the sheer beauty of the rooms. In France, you could stay at a place like this for under $85/night.

We continued north past Big Sur and into Monterey. After a tour of Monterey Bay in a glass-bottomed boat, we had a large bowl of clam chowder on Fisherman’s Wharf. I love the sea and can’t imagine living more than one hour from an ocean.

Since Mark had flown out of San Jose on his trip south, we headed inland and I dropped him off at the airport. For the first time in 13 days I was alone in my car and I was truly heading home.

If I have inspired you to try this trip, yours will be nothing like mine.

I have read many people’s accounts of driving Route 66 and I couldn’t relate to their experiences because I hadn’t lived them. I would be surprised if you can relate to my experiences. Yet I know if I have inspired you to try this trip, yours will be nothing like mine; it will be better. Route 66 is nothing. Route 66 is everything.
